Beginner Making Wine

The origins of winemaking have been traced back to possibly 3500 BC. Yes, there have been ancient jugs and urns found by archeologists, and have tested positive for certain sediments in the bottom of the jugs and urns – specifically tannin and tartrate crystals (two main components found in modern wines.) The Neolithic period of 8500 – 400 BC has given us reason to believe that these people had made not only wine, but also other yeasty meals such as breads, beer, and meat and grain entrees.

Yes, monks were the first to make wine, even in biblical times – although wine in the Bible speaks of the juice of a grape – which has some to believe that it could have been straight-up grape juice.

When Napoleon conquered the Rhine region in 1803, he divided the vineyards that the Church owned, and gave the divisions to several different families. Germany is told to produce the lightest, most flavorful white wines in the world. the most notable of such wines comes from the Riesling grapes, and is told that is cannot be duplicated – because the climate and the soil of the lands cannot be! The red wines tend to revolve around Spanish, Grecian, and Italian areas, and – once again – are told to be non-duplicated because of the region’s soil and climate.
