Pig Out in the Outer Banks With Delicious Barbecue

Barbecue at the beach? Right, most will associate a beach vacation with day after day of dining in seafood restaurants, but in the Outer Banks variety is the spice of life. You can be certain, too, many of those spices are used in the North Carolina style barbecue eateries found along the Currituck Coast.

BBQ is BBQ, right?

Contrary to the belief of the standard palates, no two barbecued pigs are alike. When tourists outside of the Carolinas reckon of barbecue, usually what comes to mind are the thick, tomato-based sauces and succulent ribs of neighboring states. Indeed, it’s possible to find such delights in the Outer Banks, there is a distinct difference in the way pork is cooked in the eastern part of this state. For starters, pork is always cooked well done, as long as eighteen hours, and never reveals any pink in the meat. When finished, the pork is cut and shredded until the meat is nearly threaded, maybe with a few chunks for texture. But what most separates Carolina barbecue from the rest of the herd (no pun intended) in the sauce.

Really, Carolina barbecue sauce isn’t really sauce at all. The traditional way to delight in Carolina pork is to eat it plain and savor the flavor of the smoked meat. Sometimes diners will add a touch of seasoned vinegar for moisture and an extra kick. But if you are a denizen of the thick sauces, no need to worry. You can still find your favorites in the Outer Banks, as they are made available for tourists and the occasional local. After a trip to the beach, you can pig out on Carolina barbecue at these favorite haunts:

B J’s Carolina Café – Jarvisburg: the home of award winning Eastern style North Carolina BBQ. Open seven days a week, catering available.

Corolla Village BBQ – Corolla: pulled pork, ribs, and creamy coleslaw. The perfect lunch after a day on the beach.

Currituck BBQ Company – Barco: a local favorite on the mainland, with NC-style barbecue, brisket, and chicken.

Lang’s NC Bar-B-Que & Rib Shack – Jarvisburg: everything is made from scratch – from the sides to the juicy ribs.

Satisfy your craving for barbecue when you come to the Outer Banks for your vacation, and sample the best of the North Carolina style.
