Favorite Restaurant Meals: Why Not Make Them Yourself?

People eat out more often than ever before. You and your family probably have your favorite restaurants that you return to again and again. And, for each of those restaurants, you probably have a small list of your favorite menu items.

Frequent dining-out is our way of coping with work and school schedules that are much more crowded and hectic than those followed by our grandparents–possibly even our parents. But sometimes, it’s nice to slow down and delight in a meal at our own dining-room table.

Next time you’ve scheduled an at-home meal, why not add some fun to the occasion by whipping up a menu based on folks’ favorite restaurant dishes? Call it “eating out at home.” Kids adore the thought!

If you’re an experienced cook, you can probably figure out an approximate recipe for each of your favorite restaurant dishes. Remember, presentation counts for a lot, so try to serve each item in a meal as the restaurant would–with the same type of garnishes, for example.

To get exact recipes, try asking your waiter or the restaurant’s manager. They worst they can do is say no. Don’t take it terribly if they refuse the request. Many of the large chain restaurants in particular keep their most well loved recipes a closely guarded secret.

If your initial attempts to figure out a recipe on your own, or to get it from the restaurant, are unsuccessful, you need not give up. There are groups on the Web that exchange restaurant recipes with one another–you just have to seek them out.

The simplest way to get these “top secret” recipes, though, is to obtain one of the several brilliant books on this topic that have been published in recent years. The most up-to-date recipes can be found in e-book form, which also has the advantage of being immediately accessible. You can plot an “eating out at home” occasion for tonight and have the recipes in hand in a few minutes.
