Can We Imitate Classic Recipes

It is common practice now among average income families to eat out 2 to 3 times in a week. It is estimated that in USA a couple(husband and wife or two partners) may spend about 200 dollars a month for their outside meals.With children included this amount will be larger. In Britain it is very common to have a family take-away day each week where a pizza meal or an Indian meal is delivered to the home

Now that we are talking in terms of hundreds of dollars each month just for the privilege of eating some fancy food, a lot of hard working mums and dads often wonder whether they can really afford all this.

But the power of the media is not to be trifled with. Just take a look at the following branded foods and immediately our mind conjures up images of mouth-watering dishes:

Applebees-Baby Back Ribs, Fiesta Lime Chicken.
Boston Market-Creamed Spinach,Spicy Rice,Macaroni and Cheese,Meatloaf.
Chili’s-Boneless Buffalo Wings,Fajistas,Southwestern Chicken Chili.

These companies are going to tell you that it costs them thousands of dollars to perfect a recipe.They have to use the best chefs,use the best raw materials from around the world and spare no expense.So that they can give you,the customer,the meal of your choice.And of course they also tell you that a lot of expensive market research has been conducted, and so they are offering you what you really want in terms of taste and appearance.

Of course we adults are not so naïve as to believe all of the statements place forth by the large corporations. We know there is a lot of hype involvedto benefit the sellers and to line the pockets of the advertisers as well.

More and more people are now trying to imitate the dishes served by these huge brand eating establishments.Not only to save money but to satisfy the taste buds of the family who now want similar things which they had so loved at Taco Bell or Popeyes or Olive Garden. Many of us are coming up with amazingly copycat dishes, but at much cheaper prices.

It is honest to say that initially we may spend an dreadful amount of time to get the dish right, and have saved some money.But it is the satisfaction of seeing your family delight in what you have cooked.And anyway the time factor decreases as you cook the same dish a couple of times.

And we save on raw ingredients as well when we try out different combinations.For example instead of adding saffron,which is really expensive but a must for paella or clams or spicy rice,we can try a bit of turmeric which has very similar final effects,but at a fraction of the cost.To make your grilled or barbequed meat really tender and flavoursome,just leave the meat in the marinade in a fridge for 2 hours before cooking.Same with your pastry-leave in the fridge for 20 minutes before putting in the oven.Why buy expensive fillets of chicken when you can buy a huge cheap frozen bird,defrost and par-boil, and the flesh just comes off the bone.The meat can then be either grilled or baked in the oven.Just add 2 cloves and a touch of cinnamon powder to any beef or lamb stew while it is boiling and you won’t get that heavy meaty odour.Add a pinch of bicarbonate of soda to your minced meat before grilling or frying and you get a softer texture of your kebabs or burgers.
