In The Beginning There Were Coffee Grinders

The earliest method that people used for grinding their coffee involved placing it in a bowl and crushing it between the sides and bottom of the bowl with the blunt end of a stick.

This process for grinding the coffee beans was very time consuming and also very messy. Not to mention the fact that it was very hard work! others that just didn’t have the patience for the whole process would just smash the coffee with a hammer.

Thankfully, these methods were soon replaced by a mechanical grinder. These was widely adapted because people were already using grinders for their spices.

The coffee beans were placed between two disks. One stayed stationary while the other one went. The moving of the disks is what caused the grinding of the beans. this process has also been referred to as milling.

The milling style of coffee grinders are now available in a wide variety of colors with many features included. The prices can vary, usually between $50 to $200, depending on the brand and quality.

The grinding blades could be brought closer together or further apart by tightening or loosening a screw, making these grinders adjustable to whatever size coffee that you wanted.

Also around this time was the innovation of the wall mount. Finally the grinder wouldn’t have to be held in your hands while you ground your coffee beans.

People were soon learning that the way you grind the coffee effects the taste in the end. People also started to learn that if the ground coffee was uniform in size that the brewing would be much simpler. The finer the grind, the more flavor your coffee would have.

Coffee grinders soon became replaced by machines which allowed the manufacturer to make the coffee taste the same every time. These machines soon led to large coffee plants making large amounts of coffee.
