Apple Cider Rich in Antioxidants

For centuries apple cider has been thought by many to be a contributor to fantastic health and a long life. Until recently, but, such opinions have only been the equivalent of ‘ancient wives tales’. But now scientists are objectively studying the possible benefits of English apple cider consumption. And to this end, a research team has conducted a study to prove the theory and answer the question, ‘Can a pint of English cider a day keep the doctor away?’

Brewing Research International scientists brought together twelve subjects to taste and test 35 different varieties of apple cider, an apple dessert, and over 15 different types of English cider apples.

Among the conclusions reached was that English cider apples are rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols, of course, are proven antioxidant substances that are considered by many to be essential for combating oxidative stress and for keeping the cardiovascular system resilient, strong, and healthy (ongoing research is being conducted to find out exactly how the body absorbs these natural chemicals).

Polyphenol antioxidants are found in many nutritional sources–from green tea, olive oil, and chocolate, to red wine, fruits, nuts and vegetables–and are known to protect the body against free radicals and ward off certain types of diseases, such as heart disease.

Are all ciders and apples the same when it comes to polyphenols? Not at all. In fact, research has shown that different varieties of ciders and apples show varied and measurable differences in the amount of polyphenolic antioxidants contained by different english cider apples and apple ciders.

In general terms, but, researchers say that now, instead of reaching for a glass of red wine to obtain the protection offered by resveratrol (alternative medicine afficionados have long been aware of the benefits of this substance, found in grape skins and in red wine), people can reach for a half pint of apple cider to get the same amount of antioxidants and antioxidant protection.

Still, many find it vital to stress that alcohol intake should be limited and that too much of a excellent thing may not be such a “excellent thing”. And advice from such corners would typically advise drinkers to keep the recommended daily amount in mind, which is 2 to 3 units per day for women and for men, 3 to 4 units.
