Blueberry Season, A Great Time for Enjoying One of the World’s Healthiest Foods

Blueberry season starts in May and goes until about October. North America accounts for about 90% of the world’s blueberry crop. The blueberry belongs to the same family of plants as the azalea and the rhododendron. There are approximately 30 different species of blueberries. Blueberries were an vital ingredient in pemmican, a traditional Native American food composed of dried meat and fruit. But, they were not really consumed in fantastic amounts until the mid-19th Century when sugar became widely available as a sweetener. They are one of the few “truly” blue foods, getting their color from anthocyanin, a water-soluble pigment that can range from red to blue.

Health Benefits:

• Blueberries contain high levels of anti-oxidants. These anti-oxidants help protect the body from the damaging effects of free radicals and the chronic diseases associated with aging. The anthocyanin in blueberries gives them much of their anti-oxidant properties.
• Blueberries are a low calorie, low sodium source of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
• Blueberries are a excellent source of vitamin C, manganese and vitamin E.
• Blueberries contain ellagic acid, which has been proven to prevent cell hurt.
• Blueberries contain resveratrol, a potential anti-cancer agent.
• Studies have also shown that blueberries may improve memory and vision loss.

How to Select and Store:

Choose blueberries that are firm and have a lively, uniform hue color with a whitish bloom. Shake the container, notice whether the berries go freely or not. If they don’t, this could mean they are soft and hurt. Avoid berries that are dull in color or have a watery texture. Ripe blueberries should be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator where they will stay fresh for about a week. But, it is recommended for the best taste and texture to eat them within a few days. Always check and remove any hurt berries before storing them and don’t wash the berries until right before eating.
You may also freeze berries. This will change their texture and flavor slightly.


Blueberry Streusel Coffee Cake

Serving Size-4 Preparation Time: 30 minutes.



• 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
• 3 tablespoons flour
• 2 teaspoons cinnamon
• 2 tablespoons butter
• ¾ cup chopped walnuts


• 2 cups flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 teaspoon soda
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
• 3 eggs
• 1 cup sour cream
• 2 cups blueberries

Prepare topping — combine all ingredients until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in nuts and reserve.

Prepare batter — cream butter until fluffy, add sugar and lemon rind and beat well. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl and then add dry mixture alternately with the sour cream; blending well after each addition. Spread batter evenly over the bottom of a greased 13 X 9 X 2 inch pan. Sprinkle blueberries over batter. Sprinkle reserved topping over blueberries.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 – 35 minutes. Serve warm.
