Green Tea and Pregnancy

It seems as though anything that is excellent for your health in one area may also adversely affect you in another area – and the relationship of green tea and pregnancy is no exception. You have already heard about how many incredible benefits there are to drinking green tea on a regular basis. You can help your body fight cancer, green tea may be able to keep you from contracting any of the various neurological diseases that can spring up at any time, and there is even evidence that green tea can help you lose weight.

Unfortunately, because of the relationship of green tea and pregnancy – you have to forgo all of these incredible benefits for nine months if you have been positively tested for pregnancy. The reason for this is because green tea can block various chemicals and enzymes in your body that are extremely vital for the proper nervous system development of your baby. If you were to block these chemicals and enzymes for too long – your child could end up with one of numerous birth defects or retardation.

Recent studies have shown that the very same chemical (ECGC) that is found in green tea which is able to fight cancer cells in your body is the culprit for the negative relationship between green tea and pregnancy. The ECGC apparently binds with a particular enzyme in your body which in turn prevents folate from being taken into your blood stream. No folate in your body means possible retardation for your growing child.

At this point, it is still unclear about how much green tea you can safely drink while you are pregnant – but it is looking as though two cups per day may be a high estimate. If you want to be on the safe side, it is best for you and your unborn child if you cut green tea out of your diet all together during your pregnancy.
